For about a week I have not been able to get to https://www.howtogeek.com
https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ says it's up.

No internet device in the house can get to it. 2 laptops, and my phone.
However if I disconnect the wi-fi on the phone and connect via cell, then I can get the page.

So what is common to everything? I rebooted the router.

Error:

Secure Connection Failed

An error occurred during a connection to www.howtogeek.com.

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data
could not be verified.

The page works perfectly here.
Perhaps you have a problem with the DNS-server. This is set on your
router. Usually the provider sets the own DNS-server.

That is why your cell can reach the page and all devices that use your
routing via the server can't. It uses a different DNS-server.

Log into your router and change the setting to 1.1.1.1 which is the
Cloudflare-resolver. Uncensored and btw the fastest resolver on the
planet (for non-military use).

You are censored or there is a certificate-issue on your provider side.
Here the web page is delivered SSL-encrypted:

You can set the DNS-server also directly in FF:

Setting - Data Protection&Security - DNS over HTTPS. There you put in

https://unicast.uncensoreddns.org/dns-query

This is a Danish uncensored and very privacy oriented DNS-resolver.

Interesting page. Thank you.

But there are much more criteria than just the speed.
Privacy and a location outside certain countries and jurisdictions is
more important for me than just speed and latency.

what mixture of browsers/versions?
compare your browser capability
<https://clienttest.ssllabs.com:8443/ssltest/viewMyClient.html>
with the server requirements
<https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=www.howtogeek.com>
look whether they have TLS versions, and cipher suites in common

For several weeks now, they've been tweaking the site in their
fanatical quest to get me to turn off my ad blocker. Thus what
appears on the home page is different from day to day.

I wonder if your browser or some add-in is diagnosing the popups as
malware and refusing to render the site. Or could it maybe be a block
in your router? Try taking the laptop to a coffee shop to rule out
those possibilities.

https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/howtogeek.com does say it's up,
just like the https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ that you tried.

I would say attempt to ignore the warning and access whatever you're
being sent but that seems a bit dangerous.

I don't think that error is similar to a cert mismatch, or cert expired
where you can choose to bypass it, I think it's terminal.

Exactly, you can access it thru the terminal. I think I've done it
before with curl -k?

Rather than use www.howtogeek.com which first connects to their HTTP
server to then get redirected to their HTTPS server, have you tried
including the URI scheme of HTTPS?

https://www.howtogeek.com

It's terminal. Retry is all I can do.

I'm in a condo, and I see on my wi-fi there is another router with no security.
I connected to it, and the site works fine. So the top answer is "any connection via my router does
not work".

I just did a ping. and it won't complete. But I do get this:
$ ping www.howtogeek.com
PING www.howtogeek.com (3.222.102.97) 56(84) bytes of data.

Yes, it's a bookmark that is spelled out just you typed.

Last resort, Xfinity is sending a tech out to look at it. I'm frothing at the mouth waiting for an
answer as to what this is.

"Can't connect" doesn't say what error you see. Does Firefox timeout
after several minutes, or does it immediately return a DNS lookup
failure?

Is it just https://www.howtogeek.com to which you cannot connect, or is
it all HTTPS sites?

Are you using Firefox on all your hosts, or a mix of web browsers? If
you've only tested with Firefox, see if using Edge-C works (if using
Windows), or whatever other web browsers are bundled with whatever OS
you are using.

Have you tried using its profile manager to create a new "test" profile?
That would devoid of any add-ons you installed, any config changes you
made, or any tweaks you made in about:config?

Instead of going from your host to the router inside their cable modem
via wi-fi, can one of your hosts use an Ethernet cable to connect to an
RJ-45 port on the cable modem to successfully connect? Try a direct
wire connect from host to modem to eliminate any wi-fi issues. If the
direct cable (Ethernet) connection also fails, connect to 10.0.0.1 (or
whatever is the gateway IP address for the modem), login to the internal
web server, and start looking at settings to make sure something in the
modem's firewall isn't blocking the connection. Of course, if you don't
want to go through all that, use an unbent paper clip through the access
hole in the back of the modem to reset the modem. Only press and
release. Don't not hold for more than 10 seconds as that will likely
require you calling in or using their phone app to reprovision the cable
modem per your account settings with Comcast.

That is exactly what I told you at the beginning of the thread.
But you do not know the ultimate cause for it.

Can you do a traceroute to see at what hop the routing fails?

You're right. And Andy's suggestion a traceroute only gets 9 hops and stops at a comcast router in
Va. So a DNS may well be the cause. A tech is supposedly coming. Hope he isn't a cable guy.

All browsers work fine if I use another router. I've tethered to my phone via T-Mobile cell and
that works. I've connected to a xfinitywifi router SSID that is unsecured and it works.
And traceroute gets 9 hops before dying. I think it's DNS.

Xfinity tech is coming. Should have been here by 20 minutes ago.

To check if it is DNS, just change to another DNS on your computer.
