As memory serves, the location was optional. On the back door it messed
up the hinges (the wheels were rather heavy), on the bonnet, it made
that heavy to lift, although I know of people who used it as extra
storage space (tow ropes, navigators etc.). My IIA had it mounted
inside, immediately behind the seats, handy to lean on when turning
around to see where you were reversing to.

And not to be bought from the vehicle seller as the typical cost IME
is around twice that of buying a decent new tyre and wheel from
elsewhere.

AFAIR there is usually a dirty great rubber "polo mint" inside which
doubles as an internal bump stop and an emergency replacement for the
air bag.

OK, but "on most models" is not all models!

Once the problem was fixed this particular train didn’t lose any more time,
and even made up some, so there’s no obvious evidence of reduced speed
running. It finished its route through to Edinburgh so it didn’t have to
be taken out of service for repairs. Whatever the driver did seems to have
worked.

More likely just isolated the air supply to that airbag and continued at
reduced speed. At some point later the passengers will be offloaded and
train worked to a suitable location to do the actual repairs.
