A family member is on a train from Perth to Stirling which has apparently
hit a deer. This has punctured one of the suspension airbags but it seems
the driver can fix it. Who knew that trains carry a puncture repair kit?

But does he have a bowl of water to find the puncture?

Apparently there were a lot of alternating compressor and hissing sounds
happening so maybe he just put his cheek next to the bag?

Does he 'repair the puncture' or just replace the airbag assembly?

That don't always work and make the tyre unrepairable.

Bizarrely I’m currently sitting on a Lumo heading north from King’s Cross.
It’s been announced that the following Lumo, the 12.18, has been cancelled
because a train set is out of service following a collision with a deer
earlier this morning.

Not always, tyre fitters don’t like the extra work needed to clean the
foam out and make a proper examination that any puncture is in a repairable
area or damage by being driven flat too long has occurred .
The big chains won’t do it the extra work as that slows down the
turnover of customers so make it policy not to repair foamed tyres , and of
course selling and fitting a new tyre is quicker and more profitable than
finding and repairing a puncture foam or not.
Small independents can be a bit more flexible, mine when I rung them up
said they were busy that afternoon but could remove the tyre from the wheel
which I then took home cleaned myself*and took back to them later where
they then able to examine and then repair the puncture. Cost £10
compared to around £120 for a new one.

* Although the car concerned has no spare I have a set of winter tyres on
another set of wheels,
would not normally mix them but for a two mile drive no worse than a space
saver some cars use.

Agree, but modern car manufacturers rarely (if ever) give the option of
having a proper spare (or even a space saver spare).

My last new Ford (12 years ago) came with a well in the boot. It was
disappointingly empty but I filled it with a wheel from a scrap vehicle.

It’s usually a paid for extra on purchase. It’s missed out to save weight
and to thus help game various figures such as emissions.

And they deliberately arrange for the space in the boot for the silly
space save is too small to hold a proper tyre - I bought a proper spare
with my present and previous car.

Even if you use the silly space saver you probably cannot put the
punctured tyre in the space where the silly space saver had been stored.

....but mainly to keep the manufacturer happy, by reducing costs, and the
retailer happy, by providing another overpriced accessory to sell.

Our car (used 2019 Skoda) came with a full size, though steel, spare. The
salesman who sold it to us was surprised to see it.

I would assume there is some kind of provision in this type of rolling
stock for them to be able to proceed, perhaps at reduced speed, in the
event of loss of air pressure.

There's a limited amount of space, which has to accommodate fuel tank,
spare tyre and still on some vehicles a rear transmission. While still
leaving some space for luggage. The trend for "wide wheels", on even
quite mundane vehicles, makes it even worse.

I note the Land Rover Defender has gone back to hanging the spare tyre
outside the rear door (like a MK1 Honda CRV). My Series 2 Land Rover had
it fixed on the bonnet.

And on some PHEVs , eg 330e , the lithium battery is in the boot.

As for wide wheels - they reduce tyre wear and tbh look better. Not great
in the snow though but arguably better in a muddy field where there's no
hard surface to sink onto like a snowy road, just metres of mud.

The problem with spare tyres is they have to be replaced after a certain
number of years even if not used as the rubber decays. Most people don't
realise this and never do it (I was as guilty of this as anyone).

If the spare is the same as the running wheels, I would always rotate
them and so get some use from the rubber (the spare soon becoming the
most almost-legal tyre rotated off).
