This is what scientists think. Not what common sense demonstrates.

Common sense in science is often very wrong. Your guesses (or mine) are not science. They might be right or they might be wrong.

Evidence rules, not common sense.

Even if it happens -- and there's the possibility of a Big Rip at least to consider that it wont -- there will be plenty to see and so in the 100 billion years in the meantime.

And, you never know, if you meet the right "people" there may be a way or 2 out of any impending doom. :)

In the meantime, here's something coz google groups is not blind friendly and I cant seem to start a new thread.

Subject: Friend or Foe

I came across Avi Loeb's piece in Sci Am. Maybe again. He's written
something the same for a couple of pubs, but it might be worth giving
it a read if you haven't heard about it before.

Now the value-added part. Mathematical models might give a clue to how
aliens might behave under various conditions. We might not know much
about their emotional life, but if they are rational and goal-seeking
then some limits are applied on what they might do.

To that end I've thrown together a simple model based on what some
people call "the 2-slit experiment of psychology" -- the so-called
"Prisoner's Dilemma" that models shared goals or contracts as well as
whether to rat out the guy in the neighbouring cell to get early
release. The simulation follows the progress of a ship or fleet
radiating out from their home system many years ago, visiting a series
of 500 planet-bound civilisations where they proceed to barter for
provisions or new knowledge. Each side has the option of honouring any
deal made or going back on their word. The visitors have a bit of an
advantage because they get to see 100s of other civilisations and
learn how to do the bargaining better.

But the cute -- and unexpected thing -- is the visitors apparently get
tired of wiping out civilisations as they go and learn to be nice and
even patient with new planets. The plots on the URL below show the
probability the visitors honour the contracts at each world. After a
series of 100-200 planets where they regularly renege, they suddenly
learn being nice is pretty cool too.

See: <kym.bassbus.org/UFO/EMPIRE>.

How to Tell if Extraterrestrial Visitors Are Friend or Foe

They'll most likely be robotic and guided by AI--so we'll need our own AI to
figure them out

Avi Loeb

How to Tell if Extraterrestrial Visitors Are Friend or Foe

Despite the naive storylines about interstellar travel in science fiction,
biological creatures were not selected by Darwinian evolution to survive
travel between stars. Such a trip would necessarily span many generations,
since even at the speed of light, it would take tens of thousands of years
to travel between stars in our galaxy's disk and 10 times longer across its
halo. If we ever encounter traces of aliens, therefore, it will likely be in
the form of technology, not biology. Technological debris could have
accumulated in interstellar space over the past billions of years, just as
plastic bottles have accumulated on the surface of the ocean. The chance of
detecting alien technological relics can be simply calculated from their
number per unit volume near us rather than from the [34]Drake equation,
which applies strictly to communication signals from living civilizations.

You didn’t need to. It IS a common OPINION. There is a difference
between knowledge and opinion, and it is easy to tell one from the other.

Greenwald has just published some FOI material about the arrival of
the first confirmed object from interstellar space.

In 2019 Avi Loeb and his student searched a NASA meteor database and
discovered at least one object had been recorded with a velocity and
trajectory that could not have had an origin inside out solar system.
It's descent also had some peculiarities Loeb et al argue might relate
to unusual materials in the object's makeup.

The prelim finding had to await a long process of confirmation from
the US space military because a critical part of the determination
rested on how accurately the relevant instrument could measure the
re-entry speed of the object and the relevant instrument's
capabilities on that point were a deep, dark military secret.

Eventually, the military released the error bounds for the measurement
and, indeed, the object could not have originated inside the solar system.

Somewhat later Greenwald requested US govt information on any
documents with key phrase "interstellar object". The Pentagon coughed
up 2 letters related to Avi Loeb's work and Greenwald has asked for
other information to cover parts of the documents that had been
heavily and puzzlingly redacted. Any official description of the
object and its re-entry had been removed.

It seems the Pentagon has a lot of trouble admitting that anything can
possibly arrive in our solar system from interstellar space. Once you
admit it's possible, the flood gates are opened! No doubt the comments
from the Space Force boils down to something about "too far Too Far TOO FAR!"
and "speed is time by distance" or similar. Sounds hauntingly familiar.
I probably heard it in old B&W Russian space opera.

Greenwald posted today he has waited long enough for the additional
information and feels he must post what he has. It makes puzzling
reading. :)

<https://www.theblackvault.com/documentarchive/confirmation-of-interstellar-object-memorandum-and-related-documents/>

On March 1, 2022, Lt. General John E. Shaw, Deputy Commander of
U.S. Space Command, wrote a memorandum for Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen at the
NASA Science Mission Directorate. This was to confirm that a meteor
detected on January 8, 2014, and written about in a scientific paper
by Dr. Avi Loeb from Harvard University, and his colleague Amir Siraj,
was an interstellar object.

.....

That memorandum and Twitter post prompted an April 23, 2022, Freedom
of Information Act (FOIA) request by The Black Vault seeking out
communication beyond the memorandum, from within the email box of
Dr. Zurbuchen. The keyword search requested was "interstellar origin".

The result came in on June 7, 2022. The publicly available material
was omitted to help expedite the request, but those records are
referenced with links in the FOIA response letter. The remaining
records, not available publicly previous to this posting, totaled 28
pages, and were released with redactions.

Those records are all available below.

The redactions primarily consisted of referred material to Space
Force; privacy information like emails and phone numbers; and what is
tagged as (b)(5) FOIA exempted material.

The Black Vault was not going to publish the material until the Space
Force responded, however, a lot of time has passed and that
information has yet to be processed. Therefore, what has been released
is being posted here, and the remaining information once it comes in,
will be posted and this article will be updated.

The key document from the NASA release is Dr. Zurbuchen's emailed
response to Lt. General Shaw. Note the overuse of (b)(5) redactions.
