It is not a good idea to combine trying to increase one's milage with
trying out one's new just-purchased-yesterday shoes.

Lumps that catch on the toe straps are dangerously distracting. I was
pushing on the backs of the pedals much more than usual, to postpone
freeing the toe straps to a long stretch of low-attention street.

On the other hand, riding in these shoes is *possible*, which relieves
the discomfort of having only two pairs of shoes that fit into the toe
clips, one pair of which can't be worn without three pairs of thick
socks, and the other pair of which is at least two years old and shows
it.

Next fall, the three-sock sandals should be much more convenient. I
found and am darning an old pair of turnout socks that are thick
enough all by themselves.

Another relief: when I got out my cotton gardening pants this spring,
I found only one pair, which needs darning every time it's worn. New
pants don't come in cotton and Goodwill doesn't sort them by fiber, so
I was despairing and wondering whether there is a dumpster I can dive
in behind the linen-service building. But at Goodwill yesterday, I
realized that one can look for fabric that is tracked*, and found two
pairs. The better-fitting pair, the one that caught my eye and
informed me that there was tracked fabric to be found, is wrapped up
to take back to Goodwill. When I bought it, I thought so what if it's
a shade of dirty pink that make International Orange look like
camouflage? I'll wear it only in the garden and nobody will see it.

Once I tried it on at home, I realized that *I* will see it. So back
it goes, unless I go to Mary Anne's Place sooner. Someone will love
it.

I broke the trowel today, which means that Open Air Nursery will be my
next ride, and Mary Anne is out that way.

Even though the new sandals aren't good for the bike, I'm quite
pleased with my purchase. They look nicer than my old default
sandals. I've got two car trips scheduled for next week (three if
it's raining on Monday), and it's a relief not to wear ratty sandals
that were ugly when new.

On the other hand, if I do ride on Monday, I can get a trowel at Rural
King or Running's.

Weather Underground says that I might make the morning appointment,
but must come straight home. 59F isn't warm enough that I can risk
getting wet.

*"tracked" is what you call crepe when it isn't silk thread that's
over-twisted. It used to be the mark of cheap-but-strong sacking.
