Considering that "...genji monogatari is from a thousand years ago and zero versions from that date exist", could the following be the explanation?:

A rival of Murasaki (Sei Shonagon?) showed the Emperor a chapter that Murasaki had written and convinced him that either:

- Murasaki was actually writing a thinly-veiled unflattering portrayal of life at court, or,

- That she was holding the office of the Emperor and certain other members of the court up to ridicule.

The Emperor then ordered that all copies of her novel be confiscated and destroyed.

Might that also explain why she seems to have ended her novel in the middle of a sentence, i.e., she was ordered to appear before the Emperor immediately?

And that some court members surreptitiously had copied her manuscript and kept it a secret from everyone else which could explain the existence of later copies?
