Azuma (東) and 吾妻 (あずま) are both Japanese words that can be translated to "east". However, they are used in different contexts.

東 (higashi) is the more common and modern word for "east". It is used in everyday speech and writing.
吾妻 (azuma) is an archaic word for "east". It is used in poetry and classical literature.

Isn't "shinonome" written 東雲 ?
