1) is the most idiomatic. More natural would be
1a) " [...] and he was still standing there when I came back.

Not a likely reading. If you wanted it to have that meaning, you'd add
verbiage: "still as a rock" or "still as possible", etc.

Yes. "...still standing there..." would be much better than
"...standing there still..."
