I'm no grammarian, but they all seem limping to me. I don't see the
point in making up unnatural-sounding sentences to explore ambiguity
when there is so much real ambiguity in what people say.

Tom's suggestion was only clever, if he and his
companion were actively searching for a missing cat.

If the cat was neither missing or hiding, it would be
sufficient to say

"We found a cat on the roof".
Simple, clear, elegant.
