I don't think 'about' works - but why? I think there is a suggestion of
movement in 'about' - man about town, he got about a bit, he put it a
about... - which is inappropriate here.

(2) suggests they come from London (and it's simpler to omit the 'around').

(4) suggests they live near London, outside London.

In my English, 2 and 4 both indicate a general area, and can mean they
come from or live either in or near London.

In 2, omitting the 'around' will indicate they come from London, and not
in some place nearby.

In 4, substituting 'in' for 'around' will indicate they live in London,
and not in some place nearby.
