I agree, never a common word, but probably had some use in more popular
sociological discussions. It was coined in 1955, I believe by
A.C.Spectorsky, in a popular book "The Exurbanites", talking about
people commuting long distances to NYC. Probably a back-formation from
"exurban", which has a much longer history.
