I'd like to find an addon (or another tool) that looks at all the tabs
in a FF window, and generates, for instance, a single page with the
links to all the sites and a small photo of each. Hopefully an automated
short description (text).

Maybe editable.

So to generate a kind of archival bookmark file, close the window, and
later search and reopen the one that I need when I need.

Does that exist?

I though I had one, but I lost the reference.

https://www.google.com/search?q=firefox+export+tabs

found:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/export-tabs-urls-and-titles/
https://github.com/alct/export-tabs-urls

From their screen pics, you get a list of URLs with text. The text is
the <title> tag for the web doc. Once the list is copied to the
clipboart (whether you save into a file, or use a clipboard manager
superior to the one in Windows, like ClipMagic) or exported to a file,
you can edit however you want.

Ah, found the reference: OneTab from www.one-tab.com

While considering to install it on this computer for evaluation again, I
decided to try "Tab Stash" by Josh Berry. I'm trying it, but it is
having a hard time getting the list of tabs at 100% CPU, and it is
hardly responding (I have 64 FF windows this moment).

I gave-up on that, as you discovered it's a CPU hog (at least with the
large numbers of tabs I used to keep open).

This seems to be it, except the bit about getting a tiny photo of each
tab (which is a lot of work to do manually).

The result is a text file, not clickable links even if I open the file
on the browser. That's a hurdle. It would be nice to save as html file
with the proper tags. "Tab Stash" does, but I only managed to do one
Window. It is stuck thinking for an hour.

I will leave it running the entire night.

*Tabs Backup & Restore*
Keep backups of all tabs, and restore on demand. Can also export backup
file to disk to restore later, or to another profile.

It saves the list of tabs in the profile itself or on an external file.
As a session backup in the profile, I can see the titles of each tab
with their icon, and mark which you want to load.

The exported file has many entries (one per tab) with this format:

openSUSE Status
https://status.opensuse.org/
data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABAAAAAQCAYAAAAf8.....CYII=
false

So it is not directly clickable, same as several other addons.

*Save my tabs!*
Save all open tabs to a bookmark folder

It saves the tabs of the current window only to a bookmark folder you
designate. So one has to go through every window and name each folder.
Otherwise, the result is thus easy to search and access.

*Export Tabs URLs*
Save a list of all open tabs into a text file.

Text, not html, so not clickable.

Can be current window, or all.

*Copy All Tabs*
Copy All Tabs is a Firefox Add-on that takes the address and title for
each tab and creates a text list of links. The list is copied to your
clipboard so you can paste it to notes. You can also open tabs from a
previously saved list of links.

Can copy or paste the tabs of the current window. And can open them
again, from the clipboard. It is plain text, so not clickable.

You have opened *64* Firefox windows with different tabs at the same time?
I thought, tabs in browsers were introduced for not having to open a new
window for every link. I must be wrong.

No such thing as clickable hyperlinks in text files. URL strings are
just text. An app, like e-mail, will add convenience by parsing the
text, and making the string clickable. That is the app making clickable
strings that look like URLs, but they can guess wrong.

When opening a .txt file in a web browser, it renders it as a text file.
You would have to change the extension to .html, and you would have to
add the HTML anchor tags, <A href=string>string</A> for the web browser
to see a hyperlink was specified using text. All HTML docs are text.

No such thing as images in a text file. If you converted the output to
an HTML file, you would have to add an <IMG> tag to point at the image
file. Because HTML files are all text, the image file would need to be
somewhere the <IMG> tag could find. Likely, as with Microsoft's MHTML
format, you create a folder with resources, like images, and the tags in
the .html doc point into those folders. Then the tags could be relative
pointers, and be valid wherever you moved the parent folder with the
HTML doc and its subfolders with resources. Else, if the <IMG> tag used
an absolute path, the HTML doc won't find the image if you move the
..html file, or you would have to mix resources from multiple web pages
in the same absolute location for the <IMG> tag to find them no matter
where you moved the .html file.

From what I see of the screen pics for the add-on, it generates text
output you can copy into the Windows clipboard, or save into a file.
It's all just text. It does not save a web document that would have the
necessary <A> tags for hyperlinks, and <IMG> tags to point at image
files. Guess this add-on does not meet your requirements. You need
something that can save the URLs and images (of what? the web doc's
icon, if one was specified?) in an HTML-formatted document.

You could edit the exported data into a text file to make it a web doc
using HTML tags, but you'll have to add anchor tags around the URL
strings, and put the image somewhere that point to using the <IMG> tag.
No idea what image you want. Some sites provide their own icons, but
many don't. If you're trying to save a snapshot of the web page, well,
you'll have to save the snapshot, and then create an <IMG> tag pointing
to wherever you saved the snapshot file.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/export-tabs-urls-containers/?utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=search

That one mentions "custom format (e.g., markdown, html, ...)". Maybe
that one exports an .html file with the proper <A> and <IMG> tags needed
for a web browser to see hyperlinks and pointers to image files. Never
tried these add-ons, so no idea which would output an HTML document with
all the necessary HTML tags to do what you want.

So I save as html, which is actually a text file too.

So I'd like an addon that does it all.

I saw one that saved graphical icons.

I still do not know what is a container in FF parlance.

Ah, that one is a clone of
<https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/export-tabs-urls-and-titles/>,
which I tried. You are right, I could use the custom format thing.

There are FF windows in several desktops (Linux), for doing different

That finds 1012 results.

Possibly you mean "Email Tabs" by Mozilla Test Pilot, "Mail My Tabs" by
BrowserNative, or "MailTabs" by Patrick.

The first one can produce links with screenshots. Mmmm! This is interesting.

Huh.
"Email Tabs currently works with the Gmail webmail client."

So I can not use the first one (because this FF profile *never* logins
to Gmail, by policy).

The second one can use a local mail client, besides gmail. There are no
screenshots.

The third one has no "About this extension" or screenshots.

So I tried the first one, because of the screenshots. It only supports
Gmail, with Yahoo and outlook coming. I try in config "enable aditional
email providers (experimental)". The Yahoo and outlook are activated.

So confirmed, I can not use this addon. It promised :-(

+++····················

<https://github.com/mozilla/email-tabs/blob/master/docs/faq.md#frequently-asked-questions>

*Why does this only support Gmail?*

There's no standard for composing rich emails. Email Tabs accomplishes
it by doing a kind of simulated copy-and-paste into body of your Gmail
message. It also tries to check for a login form, and detects when the
email has actually been sent.

All of this functionality is custom built for Gmail. If we want to
implement it for another provider we have to recreate that code for
another provider.

We are interested in supporting other providers, and have some early
support for Yahoo Mail and Outlook.com.

If the experiment is successful we will have to consider how to support
other providers.

*I don't use webmail, can Email Tabs support me?*

Not really. You can use the Copy Tabs To Clipboard functionality to
paste into an email, though we don't support the full set of templates
that we support for webmail.

If this would be of interest to you, we welcome your feedback via the
add-on, or team-email-tabs@mozilla.com.

····················++-

Copy Tabs To Clipboard functionality? What is that?

Trying *Mail My Tabs*

Click on this icon, and it should launch a new Gmail compose tab with
list of all open tabs’ URLs.

Remove addon.

Besides, the generated list is no better than the text listers.

https://browsernative.com/mail-my-tabs/?f

The instructions mentions an options page on FF, but there is no such thing.

Trying *MailTabs*.

Does use the local client, Thunderbird, but there is only one tab in it.
It can save to clipboard instead, which does include all tabs in the
current window, but it is just plain text:

I selected this format:

<p><a href="{url}">{title}</a></p>

This results in only one tab listed.

<p><a href="{url}">{title}</a></p>\r\n

This produces the right output:

<p><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15398776/">Oppenheimer (2023) -
IMDb</a></p>
<p><a href="https://ayuda.cinesa.es/hc/es">CINESA</a></p>
<p><a href="https://www.cinesa.es/experiencias/vose/">Cinesa - VOSE</a></p>

which can be saved directly as text file, renamed as html, and it opens
properly.

There is no list on the addon description of what {tags} are available,
if any.

It is not optimal, as I would like small screenshots, but will do. I'm
pasting into a LO html document, so I can add comments.

I'm confused by your above statement... :-/

As a simple old user of apps, I seem to have been under a delusion for a
lot of years.

Maybe I just misunderstand what you wrote... :-(

I have a Text file, it's file typed .txt in which among the usual plain
text content there are a number of URL strings.

When the text file is loaded into my default Text editors, either EditPad
or Notepad++ each URL in the text file is clickable, and will run to my
browser, Firefox.

So from here there are Clickable links in the text file.

Under https://github.com/alct/export-tabs-urls, Screenshots section, the
only tags shown are:

{title}
{url}
\r\n (newline)

I suspect without the newline tag that the add-on would keep overwriting
the same line in the buffer (for clipping) or output file, or maybe each
output entry gets appended onto one line, so you end up with a very long
title line having multiple titles, and a URL line with multiple URLs. I
saw one request to add a \t tag to seperate entries with a tab instead
of a newline (maybe they wanted it in a spreadsheet were they could
import a tab-delimited file).

To add more tags probably means issuing a request to the author at:

https://github.com/alct/export-tabs-urls/issues

For each tag, the author would have to parse more out of a web page to
match each tag. He could, for example, add a {date} tag that records
when the tab got recorded.

As for adding an image, that would require taking a snapshot of the web
doc as rendered inside the doc window of the web browser, and saving to
an image file. That would be a big RFE (Request For Enhancement). I'm
not sure of the value of saving the web doc's icon (aka favicon), but
that would be easier to parse and create an image pointer, like
<IMG>{favicon]</IMG>, but likely all tabs getting saved would have their
..ico files dumped together in the same output location.

That is the *app* scanning through the document to find what might be
URLs string, and the *app* making those string clickable (to pass to
some handler for URLs). The text is still just text in the file.

It's similar to here where I can add *bold*, /italics/, or _underline_
where some NNTP clients will make bold, italicized, or underlined the
delimited strings. The delimiters are still just text, and the
delimited strings are just text, but it is the app that decides if it
makes clickable some strings in finds in the text.

Take those same text files with what you think are clickable links.
Open the text file in Notepad. Those links are just strings
representing a URL resource, and are shown as just text, not clickable.
You're using text editors with non-text features to enhance what they
render for you to view.

One of the addons I tried (Tabs Backup & Restore) saved the favicon. But
apparently was only usable inside the same addon. It wrote text in this
format:

openSUSE Status
https://status.opensuse.org/
data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABAAAAAQCAYAAAAf8.....CYII=
false

And one of the addons that saves to email (on gmail webmail) saves a
screenshot ("Email Tabs").

This second type of addon seems to be working by doing some copy-paste
of each tab.
