FF 121.1.0 Android 13

Anyone confirm this behaviour for "Open links in apps" in Settings |
Advanced? Clicking on a link to a pdf always opens the pdf in FF,
whether or not the setting is set to "Always", "Ask before opening", or
"Never". Once the pdf page appears, there are options given to
"Download" or "Open in app" above the opened pdf page.

This behaviour is different from the Desktop version, where a pop-up
appears with the options "Open with Firefox", "Open with (default app)",
or "Save file".

I don't think the devs could quite decide what this open meant. I
suspect (a guess) that it predates the inclusion of Fx's own
viewer.
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1817856>
And it seems to vary with Android version.

Seems strange that it has worked pretty well in desktop FF for years,
but is messed up with Fenix. I'm not holding my breath that the bug will
be deal with. This one is similar, and is in 115, 116, and 117
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1842578>. It would be
interesting to see what it does with, for example, a docx link (where
Fenix has no native docx reader).

I have an app, Office Documents Viewer, which will read MS and
OpenOffice documents. In Fx nightly, Android 13, it doesn't seem
to make any difference what I set 'Open links in apps' to. It
downloads the file - into the normal Downloads folder - and asks
me whether to open it, and, if I've not specified a default (I
usually don't) the usual list of apps that Android thinks will
open it and the 'Just once?/Always?' choice. Android, not Fx,
controls that.

All except pdfs which open in Fx, and I can download from there.

I see that in today's Release Notes for Firefox 122.0 for Android, it
states "Firefox for Android can now be set as the default PDF reader".
It's not appeared as a Play Store update yet, so I can't say what
happens if you do *not* set it as the default PDF reader.

I have Fx 121.1.0 and Nightly 123. I have pdfs set to open by
default in MuPDF. So if I tap a pdf in the File Manager it opens
it in MuPDF. If I select the pdf and 'Open with' I am offered
several apps including nightly but not Firefox.

I will now visit the app store... No update available.
I'll look via Settings, Apps, ... Updated to 122.0.

'Files, Open with' now offers both Firefoxes. So it now tells
Android it can open pdfs. The behavour of Firefox itself hasn't
changed.

I tested with this pdf on Android 13:

Used PiaoHong for my last reply and haven't yet changed my sig to my
full name! (Hmm, I'm not sure where that setting is...)

I also have MuPDF set as my default pdf reader. Like you, if I tap on a
pdf in File Commander it opens in MuPDF. Oddly, I just checked the
"Downloads" folder in File Commander and found half-a-dozen copies of
the same file I've been playing with in FF. It seems that FF /always/
downloads a copy of the file anyway.

I've been using the catalogue available at
<https://www.ausseed.com.au/>. No matter what my settings are, FF
automatically opens that in FF itself. Once it's open there are options
to download the file or open in another app. However, as I noted above
it appears that FF has already downloaded the file anyway. Andy's FF
seems to have the same behaviour as mine regarding opening. It would be
helpful if anyone else can let us know what their FF/Android does.
