Are there any issues with installing a current version of Linux on a MacBook
Pro (13inch Mid 2012). Will a typical (PC) [Live/]Installer ISO work (eg Mint
21.1 or Ubuntu 20.04 or Ubuntu 22.04 or Debian 10), or do I need special
installer (Mac specific) media?

No problem at all!

I installed it on various MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs (2006-2017) with
a bootable stick with an ISO-image. What never worked out of the box
were the cameras. I never cared about that anyway. Everything else
works/worked perfectly.

Proven for Linux Mint, Ubuntu and OpenSuse Tumble Weed. My favourite
Linux is Mint Cinnamon.

Good luck!

OK, I guess I might want to get the camera working (for Zoom), but not
critical -- Zoom does run on my smartphone, and that is a workable option for
me.

As I said. With newer MBPs the performance is breathtaking.

Would assume camera issues with 11 year old hardware should be sorted by now.

Define newer!
The M1/2 models are not close to ready for prime time with Linux.

Nobody claimed that.
We are always talking about Intel- or PPC-Macs. My newest is a MBP
bought in 2017.

Probably yes but I never did a search for a driver.

I think that is a known driver issue. Running (in Mint) the driver
detect software may fix that.

I just did some research and it seems that there is no 100% stable
solution - you have to build and compile some firmware and mast people
found this not 100% stable.
The quick answer is to install USB web cam.

No. It doesn't. This self explaining.

Interesting, I would have though the Apple Arm chips would be a step
ahead of cheaper Arm SoC systems such as the RK3588S.

Armbian, on the RK3588S, also isn't prime time, but it is close. It is
useable.

Maybe. Maybe not. You did say "With newer MBPs". Those are newer.

We are? Always!?
Again, I wasn't sure based on your statement. That's why I was asking.

Maybe I missed something. And suddenly the newer M1/2 MBP were suddenly
working and the performance was breathtaking.

I see down the thread that it's possible.

I have my brother's old 2011 MB Pro and was not able to get it to boot from
either the Superdrive--which does not seem to work...gummed up over the
years perhaps--or the USB.

I followed all the "howtos" I could on the internet about getting the thing
to boot from USB...maybe it's just too early for that.

It's been a while since I looked at it but it is Intel.

If you acheive success (K'Pla!) maybe you can give a quick note of how you
got it to boot from the USB.

As I recall when I got to the boot page the only options I had were the HD
and CD...no USB entry at all, and w/ the CD non-resonsive...well....

Well CD drives are not expensive at all, and sometimes a USB CD drive
will work

id research the net to see if things other than the CD drive will boot.
And or work out why the CD drive wont...

Oh...okay, if the Apple CD is not anything special and not too dear, maybe
I'll give that a try. I've had it apart to replace the battery so I should
be able to figure it out.

CD drives in INTEL era apple kit are generic IDE or SATA drives. The
only thing Apple make is the case and the logo. And the boot ROM.

No 'network boot' (a.k.a. boot from NetBoot service) option?

Good to know. I took a look at YouTube university and my particular model
looks easist of all (2011) and I see CD drives on eBay for the princely sum
of $9 and up....looks like nothing to lose by trying...it'd be cool to bring
it back to use.

I think one poser said he likes Mint Cinnamon best......

I don't recall seeing that....but I would not have any idea what to do in
that case anyway. I'm only about a '2' on my 1-10 scale of Linux acumen.

Cinnamon has more eye candy, chews a bit more CPU and is not quite as
versatile as Mint Mate.
But its a very sweet distro and window manager

I use MATE because its the closest thing to XP windows which had a
simple look and feel, but it also has multiple virtual screens which
wasn't a (default) feature of cinnamon last time I loaded it.
A longish time ago.
These days I like to stick as close to the standard distro defaults as
possible to avoid support issues.
