I think the suggestion was that it is "pointless" to offer them as a
standalone reservation. If you have a flexible ticket, it makes sense to
add a (separate) seat reservation, as it will ensure you get a seat.
Adding a train reservation to a flexible ticket doesn't guarantee a seat,
so adds nothing over just boarding that train without one.

It seemed to me to be a general observation, and obviously no sane
person would request one if they had an open ticket.

But can they even be requested (my simpler seat reservation was
bounced).

>May part of standees be bumped?

No. Apart from anything else there's no staff on the train to organise
that.

Normal for Ely.

Maybe you need to go to their site. In any case it's something I do
regularly when on a Rover.

What on earth are you prattling on about? I was doing a mystery purchase
of an Avanti reservation using the GWR app.

>Maybe you need to go to their site.

How do you think I got the error message without going to their site?

So why did my search fail so spectacularly with the gobbledegook error
message.
