A sinkhole has caused a train line to close indefinitely, with
replacement buses currently in operation.

The one-metre-deep sinkhole in Scotland was discovered under tracks on
the line between Caldercruix and Drumpellier on Sunday.

Network Rail is working to establish the cause of the sinkhole, with an
underground spring currently thought to be responsible. An expected date
for the line's reopening will be given once investigations are complete
and a repair plan has been formulated.

The Airdrie and Bathgate route is expected to remain closed until at
least April 29. Network Rail Scotland's Interim Route Director Ross
Moran said: "Sinkholes like this are very unusual on the railway, and
our specialist geotechnical engineers are working tirelessly to identify
the cause, as well as planning the repairs, so we can reopen the railway.

More pain for passengers, although hard to have forseen.

Major ones were found under railways in Ukraine and Germany.

One was found in Cumbria recently.

A strange way to describe "indefinitely". Or is that how long they've
currently ordered the replacement buses for.

Details in The Scotsman, and probably everywhere else.
<https://www.scotsman.com/news/transport/train-line-closed-indefinitely-after-massive-sinkhole-appears-under-tracks-in-scotland-4601423>

I'm not sure why they're running a "replacement bus ... between
Helensburgh and Airdrie". A train would make more sense.

Isn’t there a buried Furness Railway locomotive up there that fell into a
sinkhole caused by mine workings fortunately without loss of life, unlike
the incident at a colliery in 1945 where a locomotive also plunged into a
former ventilation shaft when the infill suddenly settled.
Its said that though he could have jumped clear the driver was very fond of
the engine and stayed on the footplate too long in the hope he could stop
it but the weight of some wagons also going down proved too much . The Loco
was buried with him still with it and a memorial stone laid by the family
marks the spot.
