I was travelling on a TGV inOui service this morning, and noticed this new
portal display when you connect your device to the free onboard WiFi:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/recliner/53608768343/in/photostream/lightbox/

It's the equivalent to the moving map display on planes, but I've not
noticed it before on a train. You can zoom in or out, view the timetable,
get information about neighbouring towns, etc. As Neil wasn't driving, the
train cruised at only about 280-290 km/h, and never got above 295 km/h.

Saw a similar thing on Amtrak a while back while travelling down the
east coast.

That looks very like the display available on ECML main line trains for
at least a decade.

Displayed on your own device, with interactive controls?

Yes. Actually it's longer ago than that, because I'd have been one of
the few people with a laptop.

It had at least mapping and LDBs. But it was a long time ago. GNER was a
pioneer in both on-train wifi and internet-accessible LDBs

LDBs?

The TGV system provides the current speed, estimated arrival time (which proved to be optimistic), journey timetable,
information on towns in the area, and more.

I think it was on the original Icomera system fitted to Mk3s and Mk4s on
GNER ~2004. There was a limited amount of content you could view without paying
for access (it was free in First Class but the rest had to pay, IIRC), and
the moving map and train time information was part of the free access.

It might have a little more info (the LDBs by implication do the
estimated arrival time and journey timetable) but they aren't the

It's the way things are phrased, with simple things which could clarify
the situation omitted.

How about "Who else does this, and since when; I haven't noticed it
before, despite being fairly widely travelled".

To avoid a prolonged debate, I'll assume that's what you really meant.

I'd be delighted if recliner didn't feel duty bound to quibble at almost
everything I post. He obviously "has too much time on his hands".

My own contributions are restricted to trying to get him to express his
views less ambiguously in the first place, not least because it gives
him an exit strategy of "that's not what I meant" when in a corner (and
rendering most of the subthread a waste of everyone's time). I would far
prefer an unambiguous statement at the start of each such subthread.

The inOui branded trains have had that from the start.

DB also do it on their ICE services. Used the map on both.

May 2017 according to Wonkypedia.

I think it comes as standard with one of the popular satellite-backhaul
on-train wifi systems.

I must have missed it on previous trips. I suppose that, once the Wi-Fi had
connected, I never opened the portal page.

IIRC the Amtrak version comes up automatically when you connect to the
in-train wifi. That was 2013.
