Not completely off-topic, because we often discuss the way train
companies regard phones as infallible causes many passengers
to end up in pickle.

What first attracted me to the new one was a supposed 7-day battery
life. But then, it does have a battery 3x the capacity one normally
finds. (Which sadly makes it a bit heavy, but no gain without pain).

Anyway, it has a plethora of other bells and whistles (including I think
the first phone I've had which does VoLTE as well as Wifi-calling).

I was planning on going to London on Sunday (nothing to do with the Boat
Race on Saturday) but discovering it's yet again bustituted, probably
won't. So having the phone working even temporarily would be helpful.

But my existing phone (a Pixel) has an e-SIM, so I can't just pop it out
and put it in the new phone. I'm not even sure I could do the equivalent
even if the new phone supported e-SIM.

My best guess is I would need to contact my phone company and get them
to mail me a replacement SIM, and given it's the afternoon of Maundy
Thursday, I wouldn't hold my breath on it arriving until next Wednesday.

And then when I've finished doing some trials with the new phone, I
could well decide to go back to using the Pixel as my routine phone, and
the new one just for road-trips. So I suppose I'd need to contact the
phone company again to reload the Pixel's e-SIM.

Or maybe I can "do that online? What would be neat, but I don't expect
to have been implemented, is next time I want to flip the account from
e-SIM to physical SIM I could "do that online", and expect it to happen
within perhaps ten minutes.

And if the gripper wants to see my railcard in the mean time, maybe he
needs to be patient (because I don't think you can just copy it from
phone to phone, but you would have to re-download it using a long
forgotten password).

Download your ticket and railcard before leaving home using WiFi. No need
for a cellular connection.

Or just go to a local phone shop and get a one month SIM with enough
data and keep your Pixel as it is until you have decided which you
prefer as your main phone. A lot less hassle than changing between SIM
types.

I thought you only acquired the Pixel a couple of months ago?

Of course! That might work for the railcard, but don't some
phone-tickets require a live connection when presented? I wouldn't know
because I never use them - paper is better. Not least because many
tickets I buy are still only available on paper (aiui all "Maltese
Cross" ones for example).

Now, what about the e-SIM conundrum?

Most electronic rail tickets these days don’t require a live data
connection. Exceptions apply.
To move an e-sim you do need to involve the operator. Out of curiosity why
didn’t you have a physical sim?

TfW mobile tickets do require a data connection before the start of the

Because the Pixel has an e-SIM, which is apparently new and shiny, and
has certain drawbacks. It's the second device I've had to use an e-SIM,
the other however isn't a phone (but recently the battery died, so I
have to port the e-SIM to a replacement gadget, which luckily are as
cheap as chips(sic).

Reading what passes for a manual I get the distinct impression you can't
(even with the co-operation of the operator, who will instead issue a
replacement throw-away number). But it's all so much more time consuming
than just swapping a micro-SIM around.

That's no good because I wish to evaluate the new phone running a wide
range of applications, some of which are tied to the phone number. Not
least the blizzard of OTPs we have to suffer when doing online ordering
and payments.

And lot less hassle than having to start a thread here, but not
adequate, which is why I dismissed the idea.

Now, any ideas about porting the e-SIM?

Does the Pixel have a physical sim as well?

According to Roland Perry <roland@perry.uk>:
>Now, any ideas about porting the e-SIM?

The usual approach is that you set up the new device on wifi, then log into
the mobile provider's web site or app, and they will have some way to give
you an e-sim for the new device.

For example, here's EE's help page

https://ee.co.uk/help/mobile/getting-started/esim/what-is-an-esim

It has, but that doesn't help me porting the number away from the e-SIM,
unless you have a trick up your sleeve.

Seven month ago, doesn't time fly? And it's novel being criticised for
upgrading too quickly rather than too slowly. I might give the Pixel to
someone in the family who needs a more up-to-date phone.

And have a bit of a clearout because I'm still using the phone before
that, for *some* apps which stubbornly neither auto-port to a new phone,
nor have I had time to trace their activation keys or passwords.

Anyway, any ideas about porting the e-SIM in less than a week?

Which means it doesn't have an e-SIM.

Oh, in that case you have to tell them to send you a new physical SIM,
or maybe pick one up at a high street store.

How about requesting a PAC code?

Over Easter weekend? What a performance forced on the user because
someone didn't think through the e-SIM proposition [1].

I know I *could* do that, but have already said it's likely to take
until next Wednesday (not least because my provider doesn't have any
shops).

[1] Something better might be to be able to buy an unregistered SIM
(they still cost only £1 and are available in many convenience
stores) then have a number to text the IMEI of the new phone from
the old phone, so the provider can immediately activate the SIM
over-the-air (and when you've acknowledged that, disable the e-SIM
over-the-air).

I was perhaps hoping something like had indeed been implemented,
but no-one has mentioned it.

Like e-tickets and other e-things, e-SIMs are for the provider's
convenience, not the customer's.

Some networks do that if you call customer services. They may be able to
transfer the account to a new physical SIM if you give them the ICCID number
written on the SIM carrier (8944...). The same goes for upgrading an old
physical SIM to a new one.

Since SIM-swap fraud is a thing, they need to be a bit careful about
allowing accounts to switch SIMs, which may be why there isn't an automated
process for it. By going through security checks they can be more sure you
are the account holder.

Not always. They are useful to quickly gain an additional sim to avoid
roaming charges.

Yes, as Clank has described.

Thankyou, I will try that. But perhaps not over the holiday weekend, in
case something horrible goes wrong!

ps I've cancelled my trip on Sunday because one fast train has turned
into two buses and a stopping train, and that's just to much of a faff.
eg Overall travelling time increased to over six hours (compared to
under 3hrs).

Only outbound, because no-one has your inbound temporary number. In
any event I'd probably never risk using mobile data for browsing when
roaming, rather than wifi.

Had a shock a couple of years ago when Google Photos pushed lots of
stuff which I in any event didn't want, to my phone. And used up all
my PAYG credit in seconds.

Surely that's for porting your number to a different provider, which not
the current exercise.

Although I suppose it's getting about time to look around the networks
(which have been undergoing lots of mergers and acquisitions recently)
to see if there's one with a cheaper tariff, and preferably not using
O2 connectivity which is by far the worst around here.

The original "nothing anywhere" coverage by merged T-mobile and Orange
was the best for a while, until they rationalised it by switching off
what they claimed were redundant masts, but went too far and crippled
the service in these parts (it was one particular t-mobile mast getting
the chop which was the main issue).

But now they may have risen in the ranks, especially on the coat-tails
of the long-delayed emergency services contract. All I'd need to do
then is try to ignore their incredibly patronising TV adverts

I already have a live EE SIM which I use (as SIM2) exclusively for those
occasions I need wifi-calling; but once again that's outbound only,
because no-one likely to make inbound calls/texts has its number.

No option to turn that off? On my iPhone I can, and have, set photos to
only use WiFi. In general, iOS can be configured to restrict data heavy
tasks to WiFi only.
