Following the recent discussion about modern operations at Reading
station, can anyone check my memory on the platform layout there before
the rebuild?

As I recall:
P1-3 were the Basingstoke line bays,
P4 and 4A were the Waterloo line bays,
P5 was the down main,
Reversible avoiding line for fasts non-stopping at Reading.
P6 was up main
P7 was the down bay
P8 was the up bay
P9 was the down relief
Reversible avoiding line, used for XC run rounds.
P10 was the up relief.
Also two good lines on the south side.

(NB all through platform lines are reversible)

The reason I ask is I've found a photo of a Class 37 on a down oil tank
train passing through what I thought was P6 and there is a platform 9
sign clearly visible.

Was the loco upside down? If not then you may have P6 and P8 the wrong
way round, with P6 being the up bay and P8 a reversible through line,
theoretically usable as an up main but normally the down relief.

A couple of diagrams:

ISTR XCs reversing in P8, but my memory may be hazy.

`i think you are right, hence my confusion. In which case the photo
would have been taken from P8 and the 37 was on P9.

If P8 is the through line, then your memory is better than mine. That's
normally where the south-bound services reversed.
