Proper codes then. Don't think that really counts :-)

Some ER units carried them until the late 70s/early 80s. There are
pictures of new 315s with four-character headcode blinds.

Thanks for that. My earliest shot of a 315 is dated 1986 and there is a
destination blind above the driver's window but no evidence of a
headcode box. Presumably they were mounted in what is now a window in
the corridor connection door

Some locos displayed 4 "zeros" (or letter "o"s) in the mid 1970s until
blue paint was applied to the headcode panels. Of my own photos, the
transition seems to have taken place around 1975/1976.

Class 501s displayed headcodes until withdrawn c.1985. I'm fairly sure
that two-digit headcodes in Scotland and the Southern Region continued
long after that on stock where the headcode was integral to the
destination blind/display.

I've found a photo of a 4-BEP set at Southampton displaying headcode 93
in 2001.

Apparently still in use on SW 455s in 2019 which supports my memory of
having seen them in that part of the world.
https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/what-is-are-the-numbers-on-class-455-destination-blinds.189029/

While not strictly headcodes I am also fairly sure that train
reporting numbers have been occasionally displayed in very recent
times on the external and/or internal displays of SR trains out of
London Bridge, perhaps when manually set (if that can be done?).
