Anyone else had any problems with them today? I had to reset my password

Nope, but looking at the times of your query and the comments, it was
happening during my overnight UT-8.

For a period from mid morning to after lunch (CET) it appeared to be
down, but then came back.

Same experience for me. Thunderbird suggested that my password might be
wrong, but I ignored that advice because the last thing I wanted to do
was to make changes at my end which I couldn't test. I also had no idea
what my password might be other than the usual one that works again now!

Why does anyone persist in using ES? There are more reliable services
around such as news.individual.net for a modest 10 Euro per year.

And for that price I’m willing to put up with the occasional, and they are
occasional, glitch.

Yes, another glitch today. They may have been replacing whatever
went wrong yesterday, but I see nothing on their status page.
<http://www.eternal-september.org/serverstatus.php?language=en>

It still works 99% of the time, which is reliable enough for the
use I make of it and very good value at £0.

I use ES. I'm trying to remember the various times I updated the lists
of postings (using Thunderbird) today. I didn't get any error messages.
I must have been lucky to have checked before and after the problem, but
not during the downtime.

I'm inclined to agree with Certes that a few times a year when ES is
down is acceptable when there's no charge. I'm lucky that I also have a
news account with Plusnet, my ISP, but that has been less reliable which
is why I setup ES as a backup... and then continued with it.

I thought PN did away with their news server a number of years ago?
I've just googled it, yes they have, it's subbed to Giganews now, I know
at the time it was getting unreliable, so I went to Motzerella, and
recently ES.
AOL.

I'd heard rumours that it might happen, but I thought since the server
name "news.plus.net" still works, it hadn't happened. Evidently they
just pointed the DNS at the Giganews server rather than their own server.

That's what BT did, before dropping the service altogether.
