It's just a pre-election gimmick. I don't suppose any of them went by
train?

Absolutely it is. Boris was promising cash for northern transport projects
back in 2020 and none of them showed up. If these Bozos really believe anyone
in the red wall will believe them now they're on the ropes then they're even
more deluded than I thought.

Unfortunately there are some people who seemingly believe almost any
tory propaganda they are fed by the Torygraph, Wail, S*n, etc.

He runs them for profit, not to buy influence. He lost interest in British politics a long time ago. In the US, he uses
Fox News to influence politics, not his newspapers.

S*n? I occasionally buy the Saturday Telegraph once every few months and these
days it seems fairly ambivalent. I suspect even they've given up on this bunch
of incompetants. Won't comment on the Mail, can't be arsed with tabloids, all
the same shit for the hard of thinking.

Its not quite that cut and dried - he turned a mostly reasonable right of
centre radio station TalkRadio into a the trash fest that is TalkTV and AFAIK
as a TV station its never made a profit and is being hammered by GB News in
the ratings so why its kept on life support, particularly since he has Times
and Virgin Radio anyway, beats me. Unless its in part to set an agenda.

They probably hoped to create a profitable channel like Fox or Sky, but
instead it's losing money hand over fist, doing even worse than GB News. I
suspect Murdoch will soon pull the plug on it.

Hopefully it'll revert to being a radio station and they'll bring back the
more reasonable presenters like Rob Rinder (fired) and Ian Collins (sidelined
to a 1 hour show) instead of shouty idiots like Kyle.

Sure, because it contains lots of news stories. It remains one of the
better resourced UK newspapers (though much reduced compared to the past,
just like all newspapers). I wouldn't post links to its political stories
or increasingly deranged opinion pieces.

Is this a serious question? I assume so but I have no doubts that the
death of the influence of print media has been greatly exaggerated.
Why else are those with spare cash and vested interests so keen to own
a chunk?

I find you can often tell what paper people read just from general
conversation with them. You can hear them echo the line that the Daily
Mail or Telegraph has recently been taking. I first became acutely
aware of this during Covid, during which I read many papers. One
person who helped me form this view was you who was espousing views on
Covid not widely found outside the pages of the Telegraph.

I suspect this effect doesn't affect under-40s but I mix with few of
those.

The Guardian is rather good on the science and tech side. Its their political
journalists who seem to be a bunch of shrieking woke hysterics.

It is far less powerful than it once was. It is also much less profitable,
as far fewer people buy the papers and advertising is much reduced, both in
the print and online editions. At one time, decades ago, most morning
commuters on the Tube were reading paid-for printed papers. Then they
mostly moved to the Metro. Now, most are playing with or listening to their
devices. I very much doubt that many are reading online editions of the old
newspapers.

> Why else are those with spare cash and vested interests so keen to own

Are they? The Mirror and Express are now owned by the same apolitical
publisher, and share resources, despite having diametrically oppositie
political views. The Barclay twins ran the Telegraph as a profitable
business, not to push their political views. The would-be new Arab majority
owner is probably keener on prestige than promoting his politics in the UK
(though he might borrow the title to produce a more biased Arab edition).
The Guardian is owned by the Scott Trust Ltd.

The Mail is probably the one example where the owner cares about both the
politics and the profits.

It might be more instructive to check if they watch GB News. That's
probably more influential than any right-wing newspaper.

I agreed with some of what the Telegraph said during Covid, but was more
influenced by the research done by the Spectator. On most political
matters, I disagree with the Telegraph, particularly Brexit (where my views
are much closer to the Economist and Guardian). The paper I read the most
is the Times, which tries to stay neutral.

The cut-off point is probably older than that, perhaps 60. Most working
people no longer read newspapers.

I'm not so sure about that. All the copies of Metro seem to vanish by mid
afternoon at my local tube station. Someone is reading them and I doubt its
all the local pensioners rocking up and taking them.

However newspapers certainly arn't doing as well as they used to. Metro is
thinner than it was and the evening standard is a ghost of its former self.
I've kept a copy from 2015 for something that interested me and its around
70 pages long. When I picked up a copy of the ES last week it was around 10
pages and a lot of that was some Gen Z popstar guff. Very little real news.

It's been rumoured that News Corp would like to buy GB News, which has turned into a sort of Fox News UK.

Would probably make more sense than chucking money down the TalkTV drain,
but I imagine he'd have to shut the latter down first or Ofcom would

They probably have a much smaller print run than in its heyday. And, as you say below, people probably spend less time
skimming through them than in the past when there was much more content.
