Here's another quiz. It's supposed to calculate your education level, but
it's really just general knowledge, again with a definite US bias:

https://www.exploredplanet.com/trending/quiz-can-we-guess-your-education-level/

I managed 51/60.

Especially measurement in meters (gas or electric?) But also
presidential/constitutional history, but I have an American-born
wife, who did stuff like that on *her* degree.

She's particularly exercised about the way almost everyone - especially
Internet geeks - misunderstands the concept of "free speech".

Only 49/60, including a couple of lucky guesses about "American" subjects.

I got 50.

I need to brush up on my moons of Jupiter, my US state capitals (capital
of Texas is Austin, not Houston or Dallas) and my unelected POTUS/VP
(it's Gerald Ford, not LBJ).

Amazingly, I managed to get those three right! One I knew for sure, one I
thought I knew, and one was just a guess.

Several US states have capitals somewhat disjoint from 20th century
economic powerhouses. Florida - Tallahassee, Nevada - Carson City,
Washington - Olympia, California - Sacramento, New York State - Albany.

Atlanta, Georgia is somewhat of an exception.

I've never been to Houston (other than changing planes at the airport)
but visited Austin three or four times.

Once to interview some rising guy called Michael Dell about his business
model; including a guided tour round his factory. What I didn't know at
the time was his marketing manager was a school friend of my marketing
manager.

Later to visit Motorola's HQ with a view to getting some custom chips
designed.

Most state capitals were chosen to be near the middle of the state, to
even out the pain of representatives riding there on horses. There are
a few exceptions like Boston, Massachusetts, which was the largest
town in the colony and then the state, and Juneau, Alaska which is on
an island near the southeast corner of the state, chosen in 1906 to
replace tne former Russian capital Sitka which was smaller and even
farther southeast.

If anyone is about to point out that Talahassee isn't near the center
of Florida, at the time it was chosen peninsular Florida was nearly
uninhabited and it is roughly equidistant from St Augustine and Pensacola.

For similar examples with which you may be more familar, see Ottawa and
Canberra.

You scored 55 out of 60
PH.D.
Wow! You have Ph.D.-level knowledge here. Great job!

Hey, how did they know what degree I have? One stupid error, four unlucky

Bug would you have known that pianos from 1900 have three keys less and
that some pianos even have 92 or 97 keys?

Not impossible, but I think it’s very unlikely that an electronic keyboard
would have more than 88 keys, matching a piano. Electronic keyboards (as
aopposed to electronic pianos) can often manage with fewer because they can
transpose electronically to get a greater range.

Steinway settled on 88 keys as the optimum number, and pretty much every
other piano manufacturer has since followed suit. Before that, and during
the time when Steinway was competing to be the leading high-end
manufacturer, it was more variable.

Which Tom Lehrer song refers to a piano having 88 keys? Must be one of
the ones I'm not familiar with.

In the intro to The Folk Song Army, he asks the audience to imagine
that lacking a folk instrument, he is playing an 88-string guitar.

The one where he has a go at folk singers, you're asked to imagine he is
playing an 88 string guitar.

Duh! Of course he does! I went through all the lyrics of the songs that he
knew, but I forgot about the spoken introductions. His way with words was
brilliant. "It just takes a smidgen / To poison a pigeon", "You will all go
to your respective Valhallas / Go directly, do not pass Go, do not collect
two hundred dollars", "Do whatever steps you want if / You have cleared them
with the pontiff", "Then you can breathe / 'Long as you don't inhale".

If he'd still been writing, I wonder what his take would have been on Trump,
or Brexit (as seen through a disinterested but probably not uninterested
American's eyes), or 9/11 (making fun of that would be brave!), or the
internet and all its ramifications.

Which is only slightly odd because a piano has many more than 88 strings!
