for the Tszyu v Mendoza bout

Paid the $59.95, Main Event channel tuned in, waiting for the big one.

Did I mention, my wife is an ardent boxing fan. Not surprising when you
note that Thai boxing originated in her country of birth.

**Whilst I appreciate the athleticism, the idea of a sport where the
main aim is to cause a brain injury to one's opponent is simply
repugnant. Look at what boxing PROBABLY did to the greatest boxer the
planet has ever seen:

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health/was-boxing-to-blame-for-parkinsons-disease-in-muhammad-ali

Then there's this:

https://www.brainandlife.org/articles/head-blows-from-boxing-can-cause-dementia-and-alzheimers-can

No thanks. That is not a sport I can support nor condone.

Agree 100%.
One of my fathers friends was "punch drunk" for being a professional
boxer, he had a lot of health issues and most of those were due to his
brain injury from boxing, he turned me off boxing forever.

**NO, but it is very important to realise the risks taken by boxers, for
the entertainment of those who are not risking their mental health to
watch the sport. As long as the viewers realise that these poor bastards
are placing themselves at great risk, just for money. Then the health
system must look after them. For that, we all pay.

It's the choice they make, right? You don't need to be Einstein to
appreciate that making a career out of getting hit in the head is going
to have long term health effects.

As long as the viewers realise that these poor bastards
> are placing themselves at great risk, just for money.

So what? The "viewers" aren't forcing people into the ring. They're just
paying to watch the contest. No different to paying to watch a game of
football or Rugby.

Then the health
> system must look after them. For that, we all pay.

So, no physical sports in Trevorland? Lets ban lawn bowls because some
old bitty may fall over and break a hip and the health system will have
to foot the bill....

I read an article that blamed the head injuries on the invention of
boxing gloves. In the days of bare knuckle boxing, the boxers didn't hit
their opponents heads because of the danger of breaking their hands.

Maybe you should forward that article to participants at bkfc.com
assuming they can still read after getting their heads repeatedly
pounded by bare fists.

**Plenty, but I don't subject myself to a sport that is DELIBERATELY
designed to cause brain damage in participants. That said, I did get
knocked out (briefly) playing soccer many years ago. It was not
deliberate though. And in 15 years of playing the game, that was the
only time. Boxers typically undergo many brain injury incidents. All are
preventable.

Lets ban lawn bowls because some

Obviously not. Boxing requires that opponents DELIBERATELY try to cause
a brain injury. BIG difference.

ROTFL :)

I understand just fine, but I don't think *you* understand the concept
of personal responsibility.

Boxers are *not* forced to get into the ring and beat each other's
brains out, and the public at large are *not* liable for the damage they
do to each other just because they pay to watch.

Your argument is a complete nonsense.

I will also point out that taxpayers fund Australian boxers' use of

violent blood sport that is designed to cause brain damage to participants.

I don't know why you think that the aim of boxing is to "deliberately"
cause brain damage because that is not correct.
I'm certainly no expert on the subject but AFAIK there are 2 ways to win
a boxing contest, the most common is to score points by either landing
blows to the head or body, the second is knock out your opponent.
Brain damage isn't the intention, its collateral damage.
I don't like boxing because I've seen the damage it can cause and its
not pretty but its just not true that the intention is to deliberately
cause brain damage.

I always did Trev. What I *don't* understand is what difference
accidental or deliberate makes to anything :)

Understand just fine. What seems to be causing you the biggest problem
is the concept of "so what?"

Hahahahaha :)

To be quite honest mate, I think the only thing you could "educate"
anyone about is how to make a world class tin foil hat :)

No, you said that initially, and then you went off on some irrelevant
rant about deliberate injuries like as if it meant something to anyone.

What I'm saying to you Trevor is that I don't care. Boxers make a choice
like anyone else.

So let me see if I understand you. If a boxer gets hit in the head a few
too many times and ends up spending their days colouring in wallpaper
and has to be treated on the public purse that's a crime, but if a
football player gets one too many concussions and has to spend their
retirement on a publicly funded Junket diet that's okay because one was
accidental and one wasn't?

Just out of curiosity, how many former Prize Fighters are there who
currently rely on the health system for care of their "work related
incapacity"?

Do you know?

I don't understand why Trevor's argument, such as it is, is relevant to
anything. It's a full contact sport, and there are risks associated with
*any* of them.

I also think his claim that the object of a boxing contest is to
deliberately cause brain damage is a ludicrous insult to both his own
intelligence and that of anyone else.

I do things legally. Others are essentially dishonest.

We could also have gone down to the club. They have it on free - but you
share the experience. We did that on Tim's last fight where he laid his
opposition low in a round and a half, IIRC. We could have invited
ourselves round to a neighbour who already paid the fee. Yeah, nah!
I paid the fee as a hassle free treat for my wife who just wanted to
relax at home and watch the bout. Hey, worked for us, no guilt trip.
