Really don't understand why people buy the Hilux. It's an old vehicle
that is *way* past it's use-by date, is a pretty agricultural drive and
stupidly expensive for what you get. I'm sure Toyota will get their shit
together with the new model next year, but the current one is just a joke.

Still, it's not as bad as the D-Max :)

I think that this quote says it all.
"Now the sales numbers are a reflection of whose ships turned up."
It also seems good styling isn't an important part of buyers reasons for
buying vehicles, IMHO the Model is one of the ugliest vehicles I've ever
seen and utes are getting uglier by the minute.

I wonder...*if* Aus was to end up in a shooting match with china
(intentional lower case), I wonder how parts supplies would go... Maybe
the least of our worries, but possibly a reason NOT to buy chinese,
amongst many others...

Pretty much. The current sales figures in a lot of cases are reflecting
orders placed 12 months or more ago and we won't know the current trends
for some time. Ford Ranger wait times are still out to 18 months on some
variants, and I imagine that's a problem most manufacturers are still
facing.

A new Rav4 is till 2 years away from the time of placing your order, and
with a number of price rises in between for good measure :)

None of them are attractive vehicles.

In fact I rubbed some guy on facebook up the wrong way the other night
when he claimed that his Ranger was the best looking vehicle he'd ever
seen and I said that if he genuinely believed that then he can't have
seen too many vehicles. He asked that if I didn't think they looked good
why did I buy one, and I replied that I didn't buy the thing based on
looks and thought that they looked like a 4x2 Lego block with a 2x2 Lego
block stuck on top in the middle. I thought it was a pretty accurate
description myself, but he didn't find it amusing at all.

Unimaginative cunt.

I can't believe how much money some people are willing to spend on a
ute. The Raptor, for instance, with a few accessories is only going to
give you chump change from 90 grand, when you spend that much, you're
not going to use it as a load carrier. In fact, I've seen a few around,
none seemed to be carrying anything in the back. One, the guy really
wanted you to know that he had a Raptor, he'd shelled out another 2.5
grand for plates saying the bleeding obvious [R RAPTOR].

Sheesh, for that money you could buy a really nice car.

Hideous looking things IMHO but some people love their looks.
I still think that part of the reason people buy utes is FBT tax
exemptions, it was why I bought my first ute on the advice of my accountant.
Very useful vehicles and I even borrowed my mates yesterday to pick up a
house AC that I was given but I rarely need one and prefer to drive a sedan.

I tend to agree. The problem is you can't avoid buying chinese
regardless of what you buy as it's either all made in china, is full of
comonents made in china or is made using equipment bought from china.
And it's not limited to cars, either. We recently finished a kitchen
renovation here and treated outselves to new appliances. Neff oven.
Bosch cooktop and rangehood. Miele dishwasher. Mitsubishi fridge. None
of them are made in China, but they're all full of parts sourced from there.

There's nothing you can do about it, and for the most part we've got no
one but ourselves to blame.

It's not meant to be.

The Raptor is the "play" version of the Ranger with a high horsepower
engine and coil sprung independent rear suspension. It's not made for
traditional "ute" work, but rather for people who want to go "Baja"
racing (it even has a "Baja" mode within the adjustable suspension
settings). As such you're not likely to see then doing much around town
as they don't have the same load carrying or towing capacity as a
regular Ranger.
> In fact, I've seen a few around, none seemed to be carrying anything
in the back.

They're certainly proving to be popular.

Like what? :)

If a Raptor does it for people them then so what? Is it any different to
someone spending 150 grand on a new Land Cruiser, a hundred grand on a
Tesla, 250 grand on a Porsche or 40 grand on a Harley Davidson?

At the end of the day people buy whatever vehicle *they* like, not to
please you, and getting your nose out of joint about it seems as silly
to me as getting worked up about what shirt they choose to wear or what
they eat for dinner.

It's all about choice, and it would be an incredibly boring world if we
all liked the same thing.

no smartarse, just a lot of ppl who recognize good value when they see
it, and those who don't want to spend money unnecessarily on a car. but
nice to see you're jealous enough to want to make snide remarks. :) I'm
very happy with it btw, and thanks for asking.

Jealous? Didn't you see my remarks on the one that I got as a hire car
last year? If I won one as a prize (the only way that I would end up
with one), it would be traded in next day.

As to good value, we'll see in a years time what it's like and what the
depreciation is.

There are a (very) few yank cars that look nice, but the majority could
reasonably be compared to a hat full of arseholes.

They certainly can today, that's for sure. But then you can just about
lump every new car on the market into that category as far as I'm
concerned, as car styling has gone from characteristic to shitfully
bland and boring.

That's one way of looking at it, but then as has been noted you're the
type of person who buys a new car based on price. Not that that's a bad
thing in and of itself, and there are no doubt many people out there who
subscribe to that mantra, but doing so isn't guaranteed to a car that
you're going to love. Just one that you're happy to pay for.

> but nice to see you're jealous enough to want to make snide remarks. :)

Lol :)

In all seriousness I doubt there would be too many people who would be
jealous of owning something like an MG :)

> I'm very happy with it btw, and thanks for asking.

Be as happy as you like. It's your car and you're the one who has to
live with it. But whatever anyone *else* thinks of it is none of your
business.

That's a lesson many people could do well to learn these days....

Me too :) I've never so much as sat in one, but what I've seen of them
parked in the local shopping mall in an attempt to generate interest was
enough to tell me that I don't want one.

Why anyone would want *anything* that made 84kW that was mated to a 4
speed auto in this day and age is baffling :)

> As to good value, we'll see in a years time what it's like and what the

It's already been demonstrated to him a few days ago when I made a post
noting the difference between a 3 year old MG and a 3 year old Kia
according to Redbook with the depreciation difference between them being
*massive*, but despite him acknowledging that post with what appeared to
be genuine surprise it largely went in one eye, danced around in the
emptiness of his head for a few seconds and then shot out the other and
has been completely forgotten about since.

Such are the problems of trying to talk sense to a person who has the
recall of a dead goldfish.

Not in my experience. At least certainly not "most".

I've helped a *lot* of people buy new cars over the years, and in most
cases people buy the best car they can within their budget, which is not
the same as buying the cheapest car they can find. Some certainly do,
but for the majority it's been about finding the car they liked best
rather than the cheapest one.

most ppl DO buy what they can afford. if they can't afford to buy
something, how could they buy it? duh! but that doesn't imply or suggest
they buy the cheapest car they can buy.

As I said, most people buy what they like best within their target
budget. Sometimes they go over when they find something they *really*
like and are prepared to spend more than they initially planned to.

This is different to you, who bought based on price without doing any
real research about what else you could get for the money.

I've repaired *many* exotic cars Felix, but not in a very long time.
I've head plenty of time to help people go shopping since then :)
